The Summer Academy for High School Students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is the definitive summer program for talented and motivated high school students intent on a fine arts education.
There is no better place to prepare for art school than the Academy, with its exceptional faculty of practicing, professional artists. The Summer Academy is an intensive four-week foundational program of college-level courses in drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, designed to develop your artistry and skill.
In addition to challenging studio classes, one day a week is devoted to exploring the world of contemporary art and artists:
· Visits to artists’ studios to learn first-hand how they develop ideas, create art and build their careers.
· Day trips to the Barnes Foundation, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and renowned museums and galleries in New York City and Washington, D.C.
Lunchtime discussions address a variety of topics:
· Preparing a strong portfolio
· Applying to art school
· Practical concerns of the artist including marketing, teaching art as a career, acquiring gallery representation, residencies, grants and more
The program concludes with an exhibition in Gallery 128, the Academy student gallery, complete with an opening reception for family and friends.
Completion of this challenging, enriching program confers four college-level credits.

Curriculum
DRAWING
At the Academy, observational drawing skills are the foundation of all artistic endeavors and essential for a strong portfolio. Students will master the drawing elements of line, shape, composition, perspective and value to create the illusion of three-dimensional forms in convincing space. They will work from challenging still life arrangements, the panoramic views from the Hamilton Building and portrait and life models while exploring a variety of drawing materials including graphite, charcoal, ink and colored media. A visit to the Academy vaults to view rarely seen Master drawings supplements the studio activity.
PAINTING
Students will work directly from the still life and figure with emphasis on articulating forms in paint. They will learn to set up various palettes, mix colors and paint both directly and through transparent glazing and scumbling. The safe use of artists’ pigments, painting mediums, brushes, painting supports and their preparation will be covered in depth. A visit to the Academy collections enhances studio instruction.
SCULPTURE
Through traditional and contemporary approaches, students will learn the fundamentals and creative possibilities of sculpture. Students will model the figure in clay from direct observation, and through wood and metal construction translate their own drawings and concepts into three-dimensional reality. The vast resources of the Academy’s new Sculpture Shop, including the safe use of hand and power tools, will be clearly demonstrated.
PRINTMAKING
In the Academy’s state-of-the-art Print Shop, students will learn the fundamentals of printmaking safely and creatively. With their own drawings and ideas as inspiration, students will make black and white and color prints using hand-printing and press techniques including: carved-stamp printing; collagraph to explore texture and shaped plates; painterly monoprints and traditional etching.

ACADEMY Facilities
The Historic Landmark Building, 118 North Broad Street, houses the Academy’s famous cast collection of antique and Renaissance sculpture.
The Samuel M.V. Hamilton building, 128 North Broad Street, houses superb drawing and painting classrooms, the state-of-the-art printmaking and sculpture shops, rooftop painting terrace, spacious student lounge, Academy Art Supply and private studios for matriculated students.
